The Agafay question, answered honestly
Search 'desert near Agadir' and half the internet shows you Agafay: the stone desert with luxury camps that appears in every influencer feed. What they don't say is that Agafay sits 30 km from Marrakech — and about 280 km, or four hours of driving, from Agadir. Tour operators sell it from Marrakech, not from here. A 'day trip' from Agadir would be eight hours in a vehicle for a few hours at a camp. I could sell you that. I won't, because you'd come back tired and quietly annoyed, and rightly so. If Agafay matters to you, do it from a Marrakech stay — or ask me about combining a Marrakech visit with it properly.
The Mini Sahara: Agadir's real answer
An hour south of Agadir, past the banana plantations and the Souss-Massa estuary, the Timlaline dunes run straight into the ocean — pale sand ridges above empty Atlantic beach. The classic day trip combines the dunes with a 4x4 run along the river Massa, sandboarding down the soft slopes, a stop at the walled silver town of Tiznit or a pottery village, and a long Berber lunch in a family house. For €40 – €60 it's the best-value 'desert' day in southern Morocco, and children talk about the sandboarding for weeks.

If your dream is the towering dunes and the night in a Berber camp — and it's a good dream — then the answer from Agadir is a 2 or 3-day Sahara tour to Zagora or Merzouga, not a day trip at all. Yes, it's more money and more time; it's also the real thing, and you'll remember it when every pool day has blurred together.
