What the experience is actually like
Camels stand up rear-end first, which produces a moment of comedy for everyone on board, and then it's a calm, rolling walk in single file behind the handler. Routes run through the Souss river area south of the city — flamingos in the estuary at the right time of year — or along quieter stretches of beach. Most rides last an hour to ninety minutes, which is about right; camels are marvellous and also quite bony.
When to go, and what to wear
Late afternoon is the answer: softer light, cooler air, and the ride often ends with the sun dropping into the Atlantic. Midday in summer is hot for you and the camels, and I'd steer you away from it. Wear long trousers (saddles chafe), closed shoes, and bring water. A scarf beats a hat — camels startle at flying objects, and you will not outrun your own hat.
A word about the animals
Fair question, and one I take seriously. The handlers I work with own their camels, rest them properly, and keep loads sensible — I won't send you anywhere the animals look thin or overworked. If animal welfare is a priority for you (it should be), ask me and I'll tell you exactly who you're riding with and why they're on my list.
